FROM THE FAMILY LIFE OFFICE: SACRED SPACE IN THE HOME . . . RITUALS OF FAMILY LIFE

Every family has its rituals. We repeat cherished ways of celebrating holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. We remind ourselves of the special moments we have experienced within our families by telling stories “. . . remember when grandma . . .” We value the symbols treasured through history and love. The special vase, the funny homemade card, the picture album, etc. are ways that we keep alive the memories of persons, places and occasions important to us. Rituals are ways we connect what seems common-place to that which is part of our personal and family holiness.

What are your favorite family rituals? Why are these rituals special? In what ways are these rituals a means for getting in touch with the sacred within your home? What is the special environment, attidue, and behavior associated with these rituals that helps your family to imitate Jesus in daily life? Family celebration should include a spirit of togetherness where each of us will be welcome to share in the sacred moments of our family.
